IDU explained.
What the French unique producer ID is, and how to obtain one.

Five minute read. Last updated 21 May 2026.

The IDU (Identifiant Unique Producteur) is the official French producer identifier under the Extended Producer Responsibility regime. It is issued by ADEME (the French environment agency) through its SYDEREP teleservice. Marketplaces ask for it. Customs ask for it. Auditors ask for it. Without it, your products cannot legally be placed on the French market.

One IDU per EPR stream, not per company

A common misconception is that one IDU covers everything. It does not. ADEME issues a separate IDU for each EPR stream that applies to a producer. A US consumer electronics brand selling earbuds in cardboard boxes needs three IDUs: one for household packaging (issued via Citeo or Léko), one for WEEE (Ecosystem or Ecologic), one for batteries (Corepile or Screlec). Each is a 13-character alphanumeric code starting with “FR.”

How the IDU is delivered

You do not register directly with ADEME. The flow is:

  1. You sign an adherence contract with the relevant eco-organism (Citeo, Refashion, etc.).
  2. The eco-organism transmits your registration to ADEME via SYDEREP.
  3. ADEME issues the IDU within 1 to 3 weeks and returns it to the eco-organism.
  4. The eco-organism communicates the IDU to you (or to your authorized representative).

For non-EU producers, step 1 has to go through a French authorized representative because most eco-organisms decline to contract directly with non-EU entities (an administrative practice rather than a legal hard rule, but universal).

Who is the “producer” on the IDU

Even when a French authorized representative submits the file, the IDU is attached to the actual producer entity. A US LLC selling earbuds gets an IDU showing that US LLC as the producer, with the representative noted in a separate administrative field. This matters because:

  • The IDU travels with the producer, not with the representative.
  • If you change representative, the IDU stays valid; only the linked rep changes in SYDEREP.
  • If you wind down operations, the IDU is closed in the producer’s name, not the rep’s.

This is the practical embodiment of the Conseil d’État ruling of 10 November 2023 (case 449213): no subrogation, the producer remains the obligated party. Read our EPR foundational guide for the legal background.

What marketplaces ask for, exactly

Amazon France, ManoMano, Cdiscount, and others ask for the IDU number in a form that varies by platform. Amazon FR uses a 13-character “EPR registration number” field. We provide the IDU in the format each marketplace expects, and update Seller Central or equivalent dashboards on your behalf when needed.

Validity, renewal, and de-registration

An IDU stays valid as long as your adherence to the eco-organism is current. The adherence renews annually (after each declaration cycle), and the IDU follows. If you stop selling into France, you can close the IDU through a formal de-registration with each eco-organism, which we handle alongside the mandate termination.

The role of the IDU in the broader picture

The IDU is the visible artifact, but the real obligation is the adherence with the eco-organism (which the IDU certifies). Filing your annual declarations accurately is what keeps the IDU valid in the long run. Read our penalties guide for what happens if declarations are missing or inaccurate, and our Amazon FR suspension guide if you are already in remediation mode.
